Conformity Assessment is Good for Competition

Conformity assessment is good for many things. It builds consumer confidence by ensuring the consistency and value of our products, it strengthens the ties of the international business community, and it agrees upon many standards that promote our well being. International standardization also in most cases inspires technological innovation. Additionally, it has also been observed to foster a meaningful sense of competition among businesses.

Will there be a time when all businesses in a particular region and industry are certified by the International Organization for Standardization? This may very well be quite possible in the near future if it has not already come to fruition. This is a scenario that may seem difficult at face value for businesses who sought an edge by registering as ISO certified. If every business is ISO certified then how are businesses to guarantee an edge? The answer is simple:  compete.

If all businesses in a region are ISO certified then the quality of life at this place must be certifiably above average. Through standardization businesses are efficient, safe, and ranked very highly in the quality of their products. Some would suggest that this is an ideal, while others would content that this should be the bare minimum of our expectations. Once all the businesses in a region are able to maintain these minimal expectations, they can then start to really compete in a way that will only leave untouched the most important fundamentals such as those attached to our standards with regard to factors such as quality and safety. This is what we would like to call as a meaningful sense of competition in contrast to the kind of competition that sacrifices what we value most about our goods and services.

Hopefully, ISO standards are able to improve our future in such a meaningful way. It would be a great environment if businesses were able to thrive and excel beyond basic standards in order to remain rightly competitive.

Conformity Assessment: Who’s Watching the Watch Dog?

The International Standards Organization or ISO is technically a non-governmental organization though it does have strong ties to individual governments. In some sense, the ISO behaves more like a government despite the fact that it is a non-governmental organization. The ISO should be, in theory, somewhat accountable to the individual and collective governments that it serves. The ISO’s main task seems to be the establishment of international standards as this pertains to business and international trade. The ISO consists of representatives for each country, over two thousand technical committees, subcommittees, and working groups. These working groups develop the standards by many methods of research. In this sense, the ISO largely sets its own standards for setting standards. Implementing those standards, however, is more of a cooperative endeavor.

On some level, the advantage of ISO certification has to do with the fact that it is entirely voluntary. The ISO has access to experts in every field, and it strives to make the best decisions possible with its standards. It’s actually in the ISO’s interest to perform this task well. Receiving ISO certification is in many ways similar to earning a credential which verifies the overall consistency of your business. While the motivation for both acts appears to be monetary, the ISO does have a positive influence particularly in areas where human safety is concerned.

In the end, the ISO is on some level a privately motivated creator of international standards. Though the ISO has received criticism for functioning as a partial business entity in itself, the International Standards Organization does produce important work that positively influences business practices all over the world. In addition to making business practices more efficient and safer, the ISO has helped our ability to prosper and trade more freely than ever before. Businesses with ISO certification appeal to consumers out of confidence. Likewise, the ISO itself appeals to governmental and non-governmental bodies for being a sensible regulatory voice that speaks internationally.

Reaching the Top, in Spite of it All

Standardized testing is a slippery slope at times. On the one hand, you have people who think that because their test scores are a certain way they either don’t have to try anymore or they confirm that they are in fact the cream of the crop. But on the other hand, you also have people who think that the mediocrity of their test scores (since, by definition most students are going to be in that broad group known as “somewhere in the middle”) means that they are just mediocre people by nature. While this is true in some senses of the word, it may not be reasonable to put such measurements on people.

After all, everyone has both strengths and weaknesses. And for some people, their greatest strength lies in aligning themselves with people who have strengths which they personally lack. True, not everyone is Henry Ford, who sued someone for libel and won his case by calling in his various experts on any given topic on which he might be questioned.
